What is the difference between a smoke alarm and a heat alarm?

A smoke alarm watches the air. Ionization models respond quickly to flaming fires, photoelectric models respond sooner to smoldering fires, and combination units carry both sensors. A heat alarm watches temperature. Most fixed temperature heat alarms trigger around 135 to 194 degrees Fahrenheit, and a rate of rise version triggers when the temperature climbs faster than a normal room would warm. The practical difference shows up in the rooms where a smoke alarm is the wrong tool. A garage holds a car, lawn equipment, paint and gasoline. Cold starts push exhaust into the air, and a summer afternoon can bake the space. An attic holds insulation, dust and, in many New England houses, a chimney passing through. A boiler room holds a furnace or a boiler, and the first minutes of a heating cycle can throw off a light haze. A smoke alarm in any of those rooms tends to nuisance alarm, and a nuisance alarm is how people end up pulling a battery and leaving it out. Heat alarms are not a substitute for smoke alarms in the rest of the house. They are slower by design, and they do not detect smoke at all. Where should carbon monoxide alarms be placed?

Carbon monoxide comes from fuel burning appliances: a furnace, a boiler, a water heater, a gas range, a wood stove, a generator, a car left running in an attached garage. It is colorless and odorless, and it mixes through the air of a house rather than settling in one corner. The placement rule that most manufacturers and fire departments repeat is one alarm on every level of the home, plus one outside each sleeping area. In a house with a finished basement, that means the basement counts as a level. In a house with an attached garage, the wall between the garage and the living space is worth watching, because exhaust can migrate through a door that does not seal. A carbon monoxide alarm should not be installed within five feet of a fuel burning appliance, because the first puff of exhaust at startup can trigger it. It should not go in a garage, a furnace closet or a crawl space either, for the same reason. Mounting height is a common question. Carbon monoxide is close to the density of air, so it mixes rather than rising or falling in a clear layer. Follow the instructions that come with the unit. Many manufacturers allow wall or ceiling mounting, and some allow a plug in model at knee height. What matters more than height is distance from the source and distance from a window or vent that can dilute the sample. Symptoms to take seriously include headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion and shortness of breath that improve when a person leaves the house. If an alarm sounds and anyone feels unwell, get everyone outside and call the fire department from outside. Do not open windows to clear the air first, because that makes the source harder to find.

How often should smoke alarms be tested and replaced?

Test every smoke alarm and every heat alarm once a month, using the test button on the unit. Test a carbon monoxide alarm on the same schedule. A broom handle reaches a ceiling unit without a ladder. Replace the batteries at least once a year, and sooner if the unit chirps. Many households tie the change to a date they already remember, such as the start of daylight saving time or a birthday. Sealed battery units run for their rated life and then the whole unit is replaced. Replace the whole smoke alarm every ten years from the date of manufacture, not the date of purchase. The sensor degrades, and a unit that passes its test button can still respond slowly to real smoke. The manufacture date is printed on the back of the alarm. Heat alarms generally carry a similar ten year replacement interval, and carbon monoxide alarms usually carry a five to seven year interval, so check the label rather than assuming all three match. Interconnected alarms are worth the extra wiring or the wireless bridge. When one alarm sounds, they all sound. In a three story house with a basement, that difference can be most of the warning time for someone sleeping on the top floor.

In an unfinished attic used only for storage, many households skip the alarm and rely on the smoke alarms below, but a chimney that passes through the attic is a reason to reconsider. In the boiler room or furnace closet, a heat alarm on the ceiling, and a carbon monoxide alarm outside the door rather than inside the closet. Keep the area around the appliance clear of paint cans, cardboard and rags.

Maintenance that keeps the system honest

Vacuum the face of each alarm once or twice a year, following the manufacturer's instructions. Dust and cobwebs are a common cause of false alarms in older houses. Never paint over an alarm. Keep a written log on the inside of a closet door: the date each unit was installed, the date of the last test, the date of the last battery change. When a unit is replaced, write the new date. A log turns a vague memory into a fact. If a smoke alarm in a hallway keeps sounding during cooking, move the alarm or change its type rather than removing the battery. A photoelectric or combination unit near a kitchen often solves the problem. If a heat alarm in a garage sounds on a cold morning, check whether the unit is a rate of rise model and whether the door to the house was open.

When to call for help

Call the fire department for any alarm that sounds and any smell of burning that has no obvious source. Call from outside the house. For a small contained fire in a pan, a lid and the stove off can end it, but a fire that has spread past the pan is not an extinguisher job. Get out and close the door behind you. For burns, cool the area under running water for about twenty minutes within the first moments, then cover it loosely. Do not apply butter, oil or ice.
