A smoke alarm and a heat alarm are not the same device. A smoke alarm reacts to particles in the air and gives the earliest warning in a living space. A heat alarm reacts only when the temperature rises past a fixed point, so it stays quiet in a garage, an attic or a boiler room where dust, exhaust or steam would set a smoke alarm off again and again. Carbon monoxide alarms belong near sleeping areas and on every level of the house, because the gas is invisible and has no smell.
